Transforming the maintenance planning for railways

Case Study 5 March 2020

The 4D Simulator for track renewals is one of our biggest projects to date.

The tool allows users to generate a virtual renewal site from various GIS datasets, combined with the corresponding track layouts to produce a platform for track renewal planning.

By utilizing the concept of a time-distance diagram, planners can quickly iterate on any number of scenarios, long before the actual work takes place. This helps them optimize the process, reduce logistical complexities and financial risks, as well as improve the overall safety of the execution.

Because the tool automatically converts the planner’s schedule into a full 3D model using a built-in library of actions and resources, it can be used to visually present the execution plan to delivery teams and allows them to familiarize themselves with the area before travelling to the site.

This award-winning* product was developed in collaboration with the University of Salford and companies including Network Rail, Babcock, and Atkins, and so far, has helped to successfully deliver 15 projects across the United Kingdom.
